Monotonik is _very_ proud to present an exclusive 6-track EP from Finland's Lackluster, aka Esa Ruoho, an artist we've been releasing (as Distance) since way back when we were putting out .MODs, and have seen go from the limited-edition "CDR#2" on Monotonik (our only physical release ever) to critical acclaim through his 12" and album releases on the UK's DeFocus Records, and more recent vinyl and CDs put out through Rikos, Merck, and U-Cover, to name but a few. "One-Offs...

"On The Hangar of Spaceship Earth" is the 3rd full-length album by Esa Ruoho, an ambient-drone artist hailing from Kontula, Eastern-Helsinki, Finland. While Esa might be more known via his other moniker, Lackluster, we're sure you agree that this is a different take, a departure from the more melodic material released as Lackluster. What is a Spaceship Earth? R. Buckminster Fuller wrote and published a book called "Operation Manual for Spaceship Earth" back in 1968. Bucky...

Lackluster pre-recorded live for Vombat Radio 2009-02-22 http://www.lackluster.org/ www.vombatradio.com - live online concerts Spiraling cascades of playful melodies. Lush canopies of layered sound. Ebbing and flowing rhythms. The organic foundations of the music you're hearing make you inevitably think of Mother Nature itself in its infinite multiplicity and richness. And this sense of naturally born expression is exactly what links Esa Ruoho's ambient soundscapes, which remind of winter...

He released one of the first ever Monotonik .MOD releases, allthe way back in 1997, and over 6 years and several highly acclaimed CDs later, Finnish electronic wiz Lackluster , aka Esa Ruoho, fresh from live sets in Ireland and Russia and his recent 'Showcase' compilation CD on Merck Records, has handed over the keys to his mind and returned to the net.label fold with this sublime 5-track EP. Right off the bat, 'Cut1' comes out with a tremendously complex blend of Lackluster's signature smooth...

We continue proceedings with this mp3 from Distance, aka Lackluster , our Finnish amigo and master of the understated ambient techno mood. This particular track drifts and phases its way around in a most attractive way.. so, just chill out, put your feet up and check out this most glacial of grooves. Yet again Monotonik tends towards the Pete Namlook/ FAX stylings we admire so much.

Lackluster. One of those artists that you seem to encounter wherever you go when looking for laidback electronica. It has been a wish from the start of this label to have a Lackluster release on this label. With this release, Lackluster takes an Ilkae track, and turns it into an 18 minute long remix jam session. Very nice chilled rhythms, beautiful melodies. A wonderful trip.

Five lush Electronica pearls have been aligned to a handy EP under his most famous moniker, which shows certainly proof of not only some kind of concept but also of the unquestionable mastership that Esa exposes in all his musical works. Without trendy side blows some grumblers might call it traditional but the more enlightened listener is fairly aware that glistening tunes and sophisticated beat architecture in broad cinemascope will never ever become obsolete.

When Finnish-born, currently Irish-based idm veteran Lackluster, aka Esa Ruoho, insistently pinged us over IM to release this stunning single track, 'Zero Million Barrels Of Oil Per Day', he was keen that it go live before the global oil market reached its peak. We're not sure we actually managed that, but heck, we figure this almost 10-minute track will convey its mood perfectly well, separately of the amount of crude bubbling out of the ground at any particular speed. Esa's official site...

Courtesy of probably the most renowned artist on Monotonik, Finland's pukka idm maestro Lackluster , late of DeFocus Records, Merck, Rikos, and a host of other labels, we have a rare treat - a full, hour-long live set recorded at Helsinki's M-Bar in July 2003. There, using a laptop running the great Ableton Live software, Esa 'Lackluster' Ruoho mashed up classic Monotonik tracks, remixes, and on-the-spot jams into a cohesive whole - highlights include a gorgeous unreleased track, the...

This was originally the first ever CD release on Monotonik, back in 1999, and was a limited-edition CDR from Lackluster, aka Distance, the Finnish ambient/idm maverick and proud Monotonik artist. The disc was limited to 100 individually numbered copies. The tracks themselves offer 12 tracks of gorgeous idm goodness, some previously released online, but now all gathered together on CD for the first time, and with a number of exclusive tracks. You can find out more about Lackluster via his...

An mp3 single taken from the limited-edition CD by Lackluster (aka Distance), this track finds him in typically drifting, understated, beautifully pin-sharp ambient form. Chords steal quietly over the top of quietly pulsating drums and weirdly insistent bass, like the slow conquering tides.. perfectly balanced, electronics practically sound natural when they're like this. Compare and contrast to any other mellow ambient idm you like, in the end nobody sounds quite like Lackluster (but, of...

Lackluster has been featured on Kahvi from waay back - 1999 being the first time he was feaured. Since then, he's been critically acclaimed on many 'real world' labels including DeFocus and Merck and most recently Kahvi: Commercial (for digital distribution). CDR#2 is the highly sought after release that was even being sold on ebay for a short time, hard to find in hard format and just for you here it is being made available in download format. Loads of favorites on this release for me, perhaps...

The first sign of a Monotonik return would be Lackluster , aka Distance, purveyor of beautifully serene ambient idm, as signed to DeFocus Records in the UK, with a 12 out already and an album due soon. But Monotonik is still lucky enough to feature some of his work, and this exclusive mp3 delves deeply into classic Lackluster territory, with shuffling percussion, layers and layers of pure sinewaves drifting over the top, and echo after echo symbolising the wind drifting icily over the ships in...

Its time for the first release of 2009 - after the superb Solar Fields ep, we've got a Kahvi regular. Lackluster is a familiar name to many Kahvi followers, and after the success of his live set at the Netaudio Festival London 2008 (a Lackluster set is something to experience live) I asked Esa if he could supply a recording of one of his sets, and here it is. Live at Oblivion (Helsinki) - 14-11-08 is a prime example of what makes Lackluster great in the live gig circuit. Continuously evolving...

The 1st release on Acroplane by Lackluster. 'One of a kind' is the expression, which best describes the Finnish electronic music auteur Esa Ruoho, regardless whether we are talking about the organic quality of his music under the artist name Lackluster or just the artist himself in his private life. Esa Ruoho is truly an original; a homegrown and uncompromising composer and an eccentric explorer of science and nature. The Cold Trail EP is Esa at his melodic best.
